Bharatiya Bhasha Family

INDICA’s Center for Bhasha Studies presents Bharatiya Bhasha Family, an online symposium on the 28th of January 2024 (Sunday) between IST 0915 hrs and 1330 hrs. 

The symposium features scholars from multiple disciplines (Linguistics, Archaeology and Genetics) who are involved in advancing the case for a Bharatiya Bhasha Pariwar

Megh Kalyanasundaram

Director Special Projects, INDICA

An Indian citizen with close to nine years of lived experience in China, he is an alumnus of Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, and currently the Director of Special Projects at INDICA. His post-graduate specialization in Strategy, Leadership and Marketing included a study of research methods. His professional experience includes stints as a Market Leader at a Global Fortune 50 firm while he has served a term on the Board of a Shanghai-based not-for-profit. His academic writings span some aspects of ancient Indian chronology, Indian Knowledge Systems, Landscape in Indic texts, Ancient Indian Jurisprudence, Ideas of India and Philosophy. Other professional and pro-bono pursuits have included building differentiated digital platforms for Indic texts targeted at specific learning and research needs and music. His research-based compositional Sanskrit music album ‘Bhārata and her Kāśmīra’ has been listed by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. His subsequent music album ‘Indian Knowledge Systems and Yāskācārya’s Nirukta’ has recently been accepted for listing by the Vedic Heritage Portal. In 2022, the National Museum Institute invited him to contribute content for multiple projects currently underway, including ones on Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh and Kedarnath. In 2023, he was nominated by the Chairman of ICHR as a Member of a National Committee for an initiative focused on Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. His work has been featured in both editions (Chennai and Pune) of Vitasta (2023), a multi-city festival focused on Kashmir organized by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Chamu Krishna Shastry

Chairman, Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti

Shri Chamu Krishna Shastry is the Chairman of Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti. He is a renowned educationalist who has been working continuously for the promotion of Indian languages. His early works were promoting the Sanskrit language, developing modern pedagogical techniques to enhance Sanskrit communicational skills, and making Sanskrit a vibrant communicative language. He received the Padma Shri award from Govt. Of India in 2017 for his lifelong contribution to the nation. He has rendered his service as a Senior Consultant in Languages at MHRD. He has also served as a member of various committees of the Central Sanskrit Board, National Manuscript Mission, NCERT, CBSE, UGC etc. He was instrumental in celebrating the Year 2000-2001 as ‘Sanskrit Year’, a program of MHRD which gave momentum to Sanskrit popularisation activities. He immensely contributed to the “Vision and Road Map for the Development of Sanskrit, Ten Year Perspective Plan” in MHRD. He has also worked with various State Governments to promote Sanskrit and quality improvement in Sanskrit Education.

Awadhesh K. Mishra

A linguist with over 35 years of experience, Dr. Awadesh Kumar Mishra currently serves as Chief Academic Coordinator (on deputation) at the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, Ministry of Education, Government of India. This role commenced in March 2022, building upon an illustrious career in academia. Previously, he held the position of Professor of Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics, English and Foreign Language University, Shillong Campus. Gyaneshwar Chaubey

Professor, Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

Dr. Gyaneshwar Chaubey is a geneticist known for his in-depth work on diverse South Asian ethnic groups, including Himalayan, Andaman, Austroasiatic, Dravidian, Indian Jews, Siddi, Roma, and Parsis. His research has had significant impacts, from identifying the "Ajnala skeleton" using cutting-edge DNA analysis in 2022 (a top research accomplishment that year) to prompting the Indian government to return the relics of Queen Ketevan to Georgia in 2021. He is a prolific researcher, earning accolades like the "Most productive researcher award" at Banaras Hindu University and recognition as one of the top 2% highly cited scientists globally (Stanford University). Dr. Chaubey actively shares his knowledge through public lectures, columns in major newspapers like Dainik Jagran, and invitations to prestigious events like the National Geographic Symposium and the Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting. His dedication to understanding and celebrating South Asian identities has earned him recognition as a leading scholar and a valuable voice in shaping cultural understanding. Recent highlights include receiving the BIRD (Bioclues Innovation Research and Development) award in 2022 and winning the Gencove USA challenge (for sequencing 300 Zoroastrian samples). He is currently a Professor at the Department of Zoology at Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Sushant Kumar Mishra

​Dr Sushant Kumar Mishra is a Professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and he currently serves at Nalanda University (on leave from JNU). Girish Nath Jha

Chairman of the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT)

Prof. Girish Nath Jha is currently the Chairman of the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) of Ministry of Education, Govt of India. He is a professor of Computational Linguistics at Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) at the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies. He is also a Concurrent Faculty at the School of Engineering, Center of Linguistics and at the Special Center of e-learning in JNU. Prof Jha has served as the Chairperson of the Special Center of Sanskrit Studies, JNU and was the founding Dean of the School of Sanskrit & Indic Studies at JNU. He has also held the position of the Director of International Collaboration and as Coordinator of Ayurveda Biology program at JNU. His research interests include Indian languages, corpora and standards, Sanskrit and Hindi linguistics, lexicography, Science & Technology in Sanskrit, Machine Translation, e-learning, web-based technologies, RDBMS techniques, software design and localization. Mass, Dartmouth, USA as "Mukesh and Priti Chatter Distinguished Professor of History of Science" during 2009-12. He was awarded DAAD fellowship in 2014 and 2016 to teach Digital Humanities and Indology at University of Würzburg, Germany and has been a visiting Professor at the University of Florence in the summer of 2016. He has also been awarded the prestigious Datta Peetha Aasthan Vidwan Award for Sanskrit. His work on revival of Sharada script earned him KECSS felicitation award. Prof. Jha did his M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Linguistics (Computational Linguistics) from JNU and then got another masters degree in Linguistics (Natural Language Interface) from University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, USA in 1999. He worked as software engineer and software development specialist in the USA before joining JNU in 2002. Prof Jha has books published by Springer, Cambridge Scholar Publishing among others and has over 138 research papers/presentations/publications and around 240 talks. He has supervised 38 Ph.D. and 40 M.Phil. research students so far. Prof Jha has had several consultancies including those from Google, Nuance, Swiftkey, Microsoft Research, Microsoft Corporation, Linguistic Data Consortium (U. Penn), U.Mass Dartmouth, EZDI among others. Prof Jha has completed several sponsored projects for Indian language technology development and has led a consortium of 17 universities/institutes for developing corpora and standards for Indian languages.
