Exploring the Cinematic Vision of K Viswanath with Vivek Athreya

Leading up to the K Viswanath Memorial Short Film Contest announced last month, we plan to conduct interviews with film personalities regarding K Viswanath garu and his style of filmmaking. In this first interview, Danji Thotapalli Co-founder and Chief Curator of Indica Pictures will discuss with Vivek Athreya, upcoming Telugu Director, regarding the impact of K Viswanath garu on filmmakers of today.

Vivek Athreya is a talented Telugu film director known for his unique and fresh approach to filmmaking. His debut film "Mental Madhilo" (2017) was received with critical acclaim. His second directorial venture, "Brochevarevarura" (2019), further established his reputation as a director with a distinct style. High quality writing, and strong performances enhanced Athreya’s skill in crafting multi-layered narrative in “Ante Sundaraniki” (2022). Many have said that Athreya’s films have reminded them of the sensibilities that characterized K Viswanath’s filmmaking style. With his promising debut and subsequent successes, Athreya has gained a loyal fan base who appreciate his ability to often push the boundaries of conventional storytelling.

Danji Thotapalli

Danji Thotapalli is the co-founder and Chief Curator at Indica Pictures. He is a senior global technology sourcing professional with a passion for cinema. Having spent the past 10 years at major Hollywood studios – previously at NBC Universal and Sony Pictures – Danji understands the power of film and the extent of its reach. In addition to working in Hollywood, Danji has been associated with the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, and comes with a deep insight into all facets of running film festivals, contests, incubation projects and grants. Danji also volunteers as a Vice President at ManaBadi, a reputed Telugu-language school in the US, and responsible for ideation and implementation of value-added curricular and extra-curricular programs. Danji is passionate about pre-Buddhist history, and enjoys immersive experiences that blend modernity with tradition.
