Sacred Ecology : Lessons From Bhavishya Purana

“Sustainable ecology is an integral concept in Sanatana culture. Ecology is a sacred aspect of life for us, and Sanatana literature contains numerous environmentally related concepts. Bhavishya Purana, one of the 18 principal Puranas, encompasses many ecological practices that are prescribed as kamya and prayaschitta rituals. The plantation of specific herbs is integrated with elaborate rituals. Concepts like Gopracharabhumi-sthapana have multiple facets. It is a Punya-prada-karma for the land’s donor, essential for nourishing local cattle, and a sacred place for agni-karma for karmanushtatas, among others. These concepts resonate with the spirit of various shanti mantras, such as Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve santu niramayah, Sarve bhadrani pasyantu, maa kaschit dukha bhagbhavet.
Om shanti ssanti ssantih..”
