Sthiram and Sukham are one of the oft quoted phrases from Patanjali. Balancing steadiness with ease in an asana (posture) or any aspect of life is easier said than done. This requires negotiating a fine balance between two opposing forces of effort and effortlessness. Sthira includes being firm, steadfast, static and alert while sukham involves being soft, joyful, dynamic and free. The question before us is that could these forces be reconciled to achieve a greater harmony at the physical, energetic and psychological levels. Yogasutra and other important yoga texts not only promise us about such a possibility but also offer a step-by-step guidance in achieving it.
In this retreat, we will explore the meaning of these two important concepts experientially through the study of the sutras, practice of asana, pranayama and trataka and with the chanting of the mantras. With a deeper insight into the working of these two forces, one would be better equipped to harness them to their advantage both on the mat and off the mat.
