Symposium On Significance Of SANYASA TRADITION

Indica is organizing an online symposium on the 29th September, 2024
on the topic Significance of Hindu Sanyasa – A Historical, Sociological and Philosophical Study

Varnaashrama Dharma, a term often used synonymously with the Vedic social order, includes Sanyaasa as the fourth stage (Aashrama) of this order. It is frequently referred to as ‘tureeya,’ meaning the final and ‘uttama,’ meaning the last or the best Aashrama. The significance of Sanyasa is mentioned in the Rig Veda and Upanishads, such as the Mundakopanishad.

Indica intends to organize a symposium on Sanyasa, focusing on the following themes:

  • The historical antiquity of Sanyasa in the Hindu tradition
  • Yati Dharma as seen in texts like Yati Dharma Prakaashikaa
  • Sanyasa as an organized non-family social institution from a sociological perspective
  • The mutual dependence between the Grihastha and Sanyasa Ashramas
  • The sources of great respect for Sanyasis in Hinduism
Sanyasa in the Itihasas, Puranas, and classical Sanskrit and other Indian literatures
  • The treatment of Sanyasis in Raja Dharma manuals and Dharma Shastras
  • Dashanami, Eka Dandi, and Tridandi traditions of Sanyasa
  • Mathas, Peethas, Akhadas, and other Sanyasa-based institutions
  • Sadhus, Bairagis, and other non-institutional Sanyasis
  • Sanyasa in various schools of Vedanta and other spiritual traditions within Hinduism
  • The revival of the significance of Sanyasa during contemporary Hindu movements such as Arya Samaj and the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda movement
  • The relationship between Sanyasa and Yoga
  • The representation of Hindu Sanyasa in contemporary academia and media.”
