The Center for Soft Power is delighted to present a webinar on the travel of Music across Bharat’s shores.

Speakers include multi instrumentalist Ken Zuckerman, Violin player and Grammy awardee Ganesh Rajagopalan, and Dr Suma Sudhindra ji, Veena player and academic.

Ken Zuckerman

Violin player

Ken Zuckerman, Grammy-nominated and internationally acclaimed as one of the finest sarod virtuosos performing today, has also been called “…one of the world’s most eclectic masters of improvisation.” He completed thirty-seven years of training under the rigorous discipline of India’s legendary sarod master Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, up to the maestro’s passing in June 2009. Ken also performed with Maestro Khan in numerous concerts in Europe, India, and the United States.

Ganesh Rajagopalan

Violinist Player

Ganesh Rajagopalan and his Shakti band members won the Grammy for Best Global Music Album with their studio album 'This Moment' in 2024.

Rajagopalan, Shakti's founder and guitarist John McLaughlin, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, singer Shankar Mahadevan and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram won the award at a ceremony in the US earlier this month.

The violinist, 59, along with his brother Kumaresh, is a prominent name in the Carnatic music fraternity.

He credits McLaughlin and Hussain for being the driving force behind the studio album that was created during the pandemic with members sitting in "different corners of the world".

Dr Suma Sudhindra

Dr. Suma Sudhindra is the foremost exponent of the Veena in her generation of Musicians. A very rare blend of the classical conservatism with a belief in evolving to the present, her range of work has extended from the scholarly to performances of immaculate skill and creative contours. Keen on making a global presence Suma’s works of experimentation have been applauded all over the world. Her recent contribution to the world of music is her own new innovation ‘The Tarangini Veena’ which has made a tremendous impact in the music circles. She was honored with “Rajyotsava Award” from the Government of Karnataka in the year 2001. She is also a recipient of “Kalaimamani” award from Tamilnadu Government. Recipient of “ Veene Sheshanna National Award ” in the year 2012 from Swaramurthy V N Rao Memorial Trust, and Ganakalabhushana from Karnataka Gana KalaParishat® in October 2014. She is the recipient of Central “Sangeet Natak Akademi Award” for the year 2017. she was honored with an Honorary Doctorate from Akkamahadevi University, Vijayapura Karnataka Nov, 2021

An undying amount of energy, inspiration and dedication find Suma entrenched today deeply within her various roles of a classical soloist, a contemporary composer, cultural activist, administrator, teacher, organizer and performer, where she integrates these roles for the faith of music in her journey of artistic explorations. In addition to the recognition she has received over the years as chronicled above she is also recognized as a teacher, composer and an organizer par excellence by virtue of her having served as secretary and president of Academy of music which manages Chowdiah memorial hall which is an iconic institution in Bengaluru. She has been instrumental in establishing Indian Music Experience (IME) as Director outreach which is a landmark contribution in the field of music museums. IME is one of it’s kind in asia and one of the five music museum’s in the world. It is her determination to not only be an adept and successful performer but to be part of the movement in the cause of music and that’s what gave her the impetus to take up official positions in various organizations.

The Bengaluru International Arts Festival an annual event started in 2009 and being held every year without break since then has been her exclusive contribution to initiate newer audiences to the world of music and dance.
