Symposium On Philosophical Contributions Of Sri Madhusudana Saraswati

Sri Madhusudhana Saraswati (c. 1540-1647 CE) was a renowned Indian philosopher, theologian, and a versatile commentator from the Advaita Vedanta tradition who was also known for his sublime devotion to Bhagavan Krishna.

Born in Unshia village, Bengal (now in Bangladesh), his original name was Kamalanayana, but was later given the name Madhusudhana after he was initiated into Sannyasa by his Guru Swami Visvesvara Saraswati.

Madhusudhana Saraswati’s early education came from his father, Pramod Purandar Acharya, a Sanskrit scholar. He later studied Navya-Nyaya under prominent teachers of the time such as Hariram Tarkavagish and Mathuranath Tarkavagish in Navadvip. He later moved to Varanasi where he studied Advaita Vedanta and then took to Sannyasa.

Madhusudhana Saraswati’s philosophical and literary contributions are vast, with as many as 21 books attributed to him. His most important works include those that enunciate and defend Advaita Siddhanta from the criticisms of Dvaita and other schools, and those that enunciate Bhakti within the context of Vedanta and harmonize bhaktiyoga with jnanayoga.

Prominent works that defend and enunciate Advaita include Advaita-Siddhi, Advaita-Manjari, Advaita-Ratna-Raksana, and Vedanta-Kalpalatika. Prominent works on Bhakti include Bhagavad-Bhakti-Rasayana and Bhakti-Samanya-Nirupana. He is also known for his extensive and well-articulated commentaries. Prominent commentaries include Gudhartha-Dipika an Bhagavad Gita, Siddhanta Bindu on Shankaracharya’s Dashasloki, Sandilya-Sutra-Tika, and Shivamahimnastotra-Tika.

He is especially well known for his work Advaita Siddhi which was written in response to Nyāyāmrta by Vyāsa Tīrtha, a pontiff of the Mādhva school. Advaita Siddhi also occupies a very unique position in Advaita Sampradaya because through this work, Sri Madhusudhana Saraswati brought the Navya-Nyaya format of argumentation into Advaita tradition. His commentary on Gita is a monumental work and its name ‘Gudartha Dipika’ is completely justified as Madhusudhana brings out the hidden relationship between Jnana, Bhakti, Karma, and Yoga, and harmonises them into an integrated teaching on Adhyatma. Among his works on Bhakti, Bhagavad-Bhakti-Rasayana is particularly significant because through this work Sri Madhusudhana not only establishes Bhakti as an independant Rasa, he also makes a strong case for Bhakti as the Parama-Purushartha. Together with Gudartha Dipika, Madhusudhana convincingly establishes Bhakti as an integral part of Vedanta Marga.

The Symposium seeks to highlight some of these phenomenal contributions of Sri Madhusudhana Saraswati, to Hindu philosophy, especially his contributions to Advaita and Bhakti.
