Who Am I? Meditation Session

The session will explain the meditative technique of Self-Enquiry through the practice of asking the vital question  “Who am I? “.

This  enigmatic yet disarmingly simple method of meditation is the primary teaching of the sage Sri Ramana Maharshi. Sri Ramana Maharshi is a pre-eminent sage who lived in the 20th century and his own realisation is  unique and unparalleled in annals of history. He realised in his boyhood the Eternal Truth, the Self-Supreme without the aid of initiation by external Guru, without the need of theoretical knowledge or study of the Sastras and Scriptures, and without having resorted to any kind of ritualistic worship.

Having realised the Eternal Truth in his teens,  he taught humanity for over half a century the direct way to Self-knowledge, peace and happiness. Much of philosophic thought is bogged down by dialectic disputes about the nature of God, the nature of the world and the individual’s relationship to them. Sri Ramana Maharshi steers clear of this quagmire by focussing attention on the essential technique to discover one’s true identity. This technique is Atma Vichara or Self-Enquiry and helps an individual to seek his/her Source by asking Who am I?

This is not only a meditative technique but an all-consuming inner quest for  Self-Realisation. This session helps  you take the first steps in this quest and will include a brief practice session and Q & A.

Moksha in this Life, in this Body

Moksha is often talked about as freedom from the cycles of death and rebirth. This interpretation says that you reach moksha when you have cleared all your karmas and stepped out of the world to return to pure spirit. But there is another interpretation, one that is more dynamic: Moksha is liberation in this life. By mastering our body and mind and remembering our divine nature, we create heaven on earth each day.

Though moksha is often talked about as being free of the body, it is an experience that is only possible when you come fully into your body. In your body, you get to fully experience life and the infinite possibilities that exist here.

Being in your body comes from going within on a moment-to-moment basis. While the negative experiences in life often send you out of your body, these negative experiences exist as an opportunity to grow and move along your path. When you slow down and pay attention, everything can fuel your personal and spiritual growth.

पातञ्जल-योगसूत्र-पाठः Pātañjala yogasūtra pāțha – 21 Days of Yoga-Sutra Chanting

Introduction:

Yoga is a journey of the self to re-join with the absolute one. The re-joining is not occurring because of disturbing noise in us. We can settle down the disturbance by employing proper recitation of the Yoga sutra. The vibration of recitation matches the natural frequency of body and mind, eventually bringing harmony and peace within us.

Yoga-sutra contains 195 sutras in four chapters or pada. Namely Samadhi pada, Sadhana pada, Vibhuti pada and Kaivalya pada. These sutras are a glimpse of the experiential knowledge of Maharshi Patanjali, who is the author of this text, a most authentic source on Yoga philosophy.

The recitation of those sutras is the beginning step to understanding the yoga sutra as a child learns only sounds in its initial development. As Valmiki was initiated with the Rama mantra by Sage Narada, he went to a deeper understanding of the word that comes out as a Ramayana. Similarly, the recitation of the sutra will bring a profound experience of the text and transformation in oneself.

Objectives:

  • To know the proper way of recitation of Sutra
  • To understand the sutra meaning through conscious chanting
  • To improve our Sanskrit pronunciation
  • To attain harmony and peace

Expected outcomes:

  • Improvement in the pronunciation of Indian languages
  • To know how to split the words when it is in complex form.
  • Understanding of some yoga sutras terms

Dates: 01 to 30 June (Only Weekdays) (Monday to Friday)

Mode: Online Zoom platform

Time: 6:30-7:00 PM IST

Fee: For Indian Nationals Rs.250/- INR & International Participants $10 USD

One Simple Thing by Eddie Stern

The yogis taught that the mind is a neutral field that holds thoughts, and awareness is the unlimited potential that the mind rests upon. The saying that the mind can be a wonderful servant but a terrible master is apt for the yogis, and sums up the essential purpose of practicing the different limbs of yoga, which is mastery of our internal thought processes and mental impressions, leading eventually towards liberation. Before liberation, though, how do I deal with the challenges of life? Is there a way that I can master my mind, and engage it to help answer the three basic questions of existence: Who am I? What am I doing here, or, what is my purpose? What do I do next, or, how can I live my life according to my purpose? A Yoga practice allows answers to these questions (which may be non-verbal) to rise up from the depths of awareness, into the quieted field of the mind, so that our thoughts, words and actions become expressions of our purpose. This is where, according to the yogis, one part of fulfillment in life comes – from living in alignment with our inner purpose. The balance and strengthening of the nervous system is a foundational part of this process, because it is the body’s messaging system. If the messages are clear and unimpeded, certain alignments become easier. In this talk, we will discuss these different types of alignments and the role of asana and pranayama within them.
